Why Alexander Peter

How do I establish the quality of a financial adviser?  

It is important to look for the following points:

  • Does my advisor have UK financial qualifications from a recognised body in the provision of retail financial advice? The three main bodies who provide the qualifications for UK financial advice are: 1) the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), 2) The Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment (CISI), 3) The London Institute of Banking and Finance (LIBF).
  • Does my advisor have US licencing or accepted designations?  Is the firm properly licenced in the US and authorised to provide advice by being registered with the states or the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
  • A check on the Investment Adviser Public Disclosure website in the US (adviserinfo.sec.gov) and also on the Financial Conduct Authority Website in the UK (register.fca.org.uk/s) will confirm if you advisor is licenced.
  • Is your advisor either based in the United States or the United Kingdom with the relevant permissions or are they based out of some other less regulated territory?

Carrying out these checks is essential to ensure you are dealing with an advisor and advisory firm that is appropriately licenced and to ensure you have recourse should there be a dispute in the future.
